The Dark Between

The Dark Between
A supernatural romance about the powers that lie in the shadows of the mind, perfect for fans of Sarah Rees Brennan, Alyxandra Harvey, and Libba Bray. At the turn of the twentieth century, Spiritualism and séances are all the rage—even in the scholarly town of Cambridge, England. While mediums dupe the grief-stricken, a group of local fringe scientists seeks to bridge the gap to the spirit world by investigating the dark corners of the human mind. Each running…

Asher, Kate, and Elsie are bonded by more than just circumstances and mutual acquaintances. Their fathers were all part of the Society for Metaphysical Studies. Kate has lived both a privilege and a working life while Asher has known the hard realities of love and Kate that of rejection.

This story follows three people unlikely to meet in the best of conditions. As a child, Elsie was struck by lightning, giving her the ability to live in two worlds at once. Asher's father believe that it is possible, but a betrayal has left Asher cold and bitter to the world, including those that believe in the metaphysical. Kate has spent the last few years of her life as an orphan, playing a hoax in a medium's plan until everything goes array.

The three of them field themselves living in the Summerfield College where one by one, they start to believe in "The Dark Between", but there's something else going on. Someone is killing Kate's friends and she aims to find out who and why. Together, these three will set out on a course to redeem themselves from their past and find a killer in this mist.

I was presently surprised by this book. I didn't think it was a YA per se, but it's clean (no sex, no cussing,) and I found that refreshing as many of the books I read have it all.

I really liked Kate's character. I think all three, Kate, Asher, and Elsie complimented each other, they were strong where the others were weak.

Once I started reading, it was hard to put it down. The story is very captivating without giving away what will happen next. There are enough characters embodied that it was hard to figure out who was the murderer.

What I didn't like was the ending. The book ended in a way that made it seem there was a second book or another story.

I won't give away any spoilers, but when you read the end, you'll understand.

This book was published in August 2013. I even checked the author's website looking for information regarding a second book to no avail. I feel The Dark Between needs that second book, otherwise it's a cliffhanger in my mind.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it.
